Enhancements and Updates: From Spaghetti Code to "Optimized" Gameplay

The Game Jam has concluded, and we placed 5th! But from the bottom of the list :')

Although it's my first game ever, I'm happy with the progress I made and I can only improve. Please feel free to give me any advice or feedback on the game!

So I wasn't satisfied with how the project turned out because there were many unfinished elements, and the game lacked polish.

Here are the updates:

  • Dialogue system: More messages (and more punchlines!), better formulation, no more grammatical errors, less monotone, and "capacity unlock" messages do not repeat anymore.
  • Counts/stats reset when you go to the main menu, which wasn't the case before.
  • Music does not reset after death.
  • Added sounds when using the Wait ability and when the shield is destroyed.
  • Player with double turn will not spend  their 2 turns opening a door anymore.
  • Enemies will no longer go on the objective tile, as it could block the player.
  • Enemy movement is now truly random (before, they favored some random directions if they could go there first), making the game easier at the first level and more difficult throughout the game.
  • If the enemy doesn’t choose the best path, it has a 50% chance of not moving. This adjustment balances the difficulty since some enemies were easy and others hard due to the parity of distance between them and the player, which could also cause the player to get stuck.
  • When the player takes the objective, they do not lose a turn anymore.
  • Enemy movement feels more fluid.
  • UI reworked a bit (in-game menu background added, sliders color changed, and main menu background updated).
  • Wait ability can be used once per turn and is reset when the player moves/attacks as it was too broken to spam "wait".
  • End screen with player stats added.
  • Cleaner code! (it was spaghetti code before, and now it’s still spaghetti but less so).

Thank you to everyone for playing and supporting my journey into game development.

A dozen players might seem small, but it means a lot to me that people are playing my game!

Stay tuned for more updates and future projects!
